Capstone Project Research Paper

The Capstone Research Paper is at a minimum a 7 page research paper that analyzes one or more aspects of my Global Studies topic. My paper covers the impact of electric vehicles on climate change. My paper begins with basic information about the current rate of climate change and then transitions to the benefits and negative impacts of electric vehicles on the environment. Some of the major facts that stick out in my paper and they include:

  • Current carbon dioxide levels are 100ppm higher than they have been in the past 800,000 years

  • Conflicts in South America and in the Middle East have been influenced by climate change leading to higher rates of drought and food shortages

  • Running an Electric Vehicle from any power source, besides coal, will be better for the environment than running an Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle

  • The current production of Electric Vehicles is more detrimental to the environment than the production of traditional cars, especially in China where 60% more carbon is produced when an Electric Vehicle is produced rather than an Internal Combustion Engine

Social Justice Day Workshop

In addition to my research paper, I further pursued my Capstone Project during my school’s Social Justice Day. On Social Justice Day, everyone my school’s community has the chance to run a workshop, and my friend Patrick and I did just that. We used our two projects to create a workshop focussed on climate change and refugees. Patrick’s project is focussing on refugees, so I thought it would be interesting to connect our two projects through the topic of climate refugees.

This product was more of a real-world look at my topic, and while it wasn’t completely focussed around electric vehicles I did dive deeply into the environment and climate change. I decided to show how real people are affected by the things we do every day, instead of just giving statistics on how the world is changing. It was very useful to connect climate change to such a prevalent topic as the refugee crisis and running a workshop was a helpful medium.

This is a response from one of the students in my class as to why we should care about climate change
